Night Sweats

What is Night Sweats in menopause?

Night sweats during menopause are sudden, intense episodes of sweating that occur during sleep and can soak clothing or bedding. Night sweats can disrupt sleep, leading to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating the next day.

Why does Night Sweats happen in menopause?

They’re a type of hot flush triggered by hormonal changes, especially the decline in oestrogen, which affects the body's ability to regulate temperature.

During perimenopause and menopause, the brain's temperature control centre (the hypothalamus) becomes more sensitive to slight changes in body temperature. This can lead to the blood vessels suddenly widening (vasodilation), causing a rush of heat, sweating, and sometimes a rapid heartbeat or chills afterward.

How can Night Sweats in menopause be managed?

To manage night sweats, try keeping your bedroom cool, wearing light, breathable sleepwear, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, and practising stress-reducing activities like yoga or deep breathing.
