Dry Eye

What is Dry Eye in menopause?

Dry Eyes during menopause is a condition where the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to dryness, irritation, and discomfort. It’s very common in women going through or after menopause.

Why does Dry Eye happen in menopause?

Dry eye in menopause occurs mainly because of hormonal changes:
-Lower estrogen and androgen levels affect tear production and tear film stability. The oil glands in the eyelids (meibomian glands) may produce less oil, making tears evaporate faster. Inflammation on the eye’s surface may increase.
Other contributing factors include:
- Age-related changes
- Hormone replacement therapy (especially estrogen-only treatments)
- Increased risk of certain autoimmune diseases

How can Dry Eye in menopause be managed?

- Warm compresses + eyelid cleaning to improve oil gland function
- Use lubricating eye drops often
- Environmental changes: Use a humidifier, avoid direct airflow, take screen breaks
