Irritability
What is Irritability in menopause?
Irritability is a heightened emotional response, where you may feel easily frustrated, short-tempered, or overwhelmed by things that normally wouldn’t bother you.
Why does Irritability happen in menopause?
Irritability during menopause is largely driven by hormonal fluctuations, especially falling levels of oestrogen, which play a vital role regulating mood through effects on brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. When oestrogen drops, it can disrupt these systems, leading to increased emotional sensitivity and lower stress tolerance.
How can Irritability in menopause be managed?
Recognise that irritability is biologically driven – not personal weakness. Prioritise sleep as poor sleep worsens mood, so address any underlying sleep issues (e.g., hot flushes, anxiety) with cooling routines, sleep support or HRT. Techniques like breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, and mindfulness help calm the nervous system. Regular exercise boosts endorphins and serotonin, improving overall mood and emotional resilience.
