Everything you need to know about your hair changes in menopause

Hair changes in menopause

Menopause can make you feel like pulling your hair out. Hormonal mood swings, changes in sex drive, hot flushes, night sweats and hair changes are among some of the signs of menopause that can leave you feeling out of sorts.

Among the many changes that your body undergoes during this time – such as dry skin, a deterioration in eye health, and muscle aches and painhair thinning is one of the most visible and commonly experienced physical changes during menopause.

In fact, more than 40% of women report some degree of hair thinning during menopause

Hair changes are a very natural part of the menopause, and you will likely start experiencing hair thinning and shedding during perimenopause. While menopausal hair thinning is common, it’s not forever – and there are simple menopause hair products and routines you can implement to get some short-term relief.

How does it impact your hair?

Oestrogen is a hormone that naturally helps to maintain the health of the hair follicle. When oestrogen levels decline during menopause, this can disrupt the hair growth cycle.

A drop in oestrogen prolongs the hair growth phase, causing your hair to enter the resting and shedding phases more quickly, leading to the growth of thinner hair strands that make your hair look less voluminous.

As oestrogen levels decrease, the relative levels of androgens such as testosterone may appear higher, causing the hair follicles to shrink, leading to finer and less dense hair.

The decline in progesterone during menopause can also contribute to changes in hair density, alongside higher stress levels caused by increased cortisol production that can adversely affect hair growth.

What hair changes can you expect?

Hair thinning is the most noticeable menopausal hair change. It is common on top of the scalp and can aggravate female pattern hair loss. Other common changes caused by hormone fluctuations include shedding, dryness and alterations in your hair texture and colour.

Alongside your hair becoming thinner, you might experience changes in your hair texture. Hair that was once thick and robust may become finer and more brittle and feel drier due to decreased sebum production in menopause. This could cause it to become more frizzy and greasier than usual.

These changes can be alleviated through the integration of natural remedies and haircare products to support your hair during menopause.
